This whimsical Gambel's Quail is made from a whole uncut Kettle gourd.
The natural shape just begged to be embellished as a quail.
This piece measures 15" high x 9" in diameter.
The feathers are individually carved into the surface and then wash painted with acrylic
paint in southwest colors. The paint is then wiped off while still wet to make the feathers pop. Glass eye's are added for realism
and a top knot is fashioned out of sculpty clay and then attached to the stem of the gourd. Finer details are painted on and
last but not least, the bill of this quail is made out of a painted gourd seed. A grape vine wreath makes the perfect stand but is
not necessary as the gourd is well balanced.
